Ai-Da, the world’s first ultra-realistic humanoid robot artist, has made history with the sale of her artwork titled “A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing.” The painting was auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York and fetched an impressive $1.1 million, far exceeding its initial estimate of $120,000 to $180,000. This sale marks a significant milestone as it is the first time an artwork created by a humanoid robot has been sold at auction.
The portrait depicts Alan Turing, the renowned British mathematician and pioneer of modern computing, as a deity of artificial intelligence. Ai-Da’s creation process involved analyzing a photograph of Turing and producing multiple sketches and paintings before finalizing the piece using advanced AI algorithms and a 3-D textured printer. The artwork was completed with additional details applied by Ai-Da herself.
Developed by Aidan Meller and a team of experts, Ai-Da is designed to provoke discussions about the role of AI in art and its broader societal implications. The sale of “A.I. God” not only highlights the growing intersection of technology and art but also raises important questions about creativity, authorship, and the future influence of AI on human decision-making.
The proceeds from the auction are intended to be reinvested into further developing Ai-Da’s capabilities, ensuring that she continues to push boundaries in both art and technology. The portrait’s provocative title and subject matter aim to encourage reflection on the ethical use of AI and its potential to reshape various aspects of human life.
